Construction Worker Accidents Blight the 2022 Qatar World Cup

With the recent arrests and allegations surrounding the FIFA organisation, there’s one scandal which hasn’t been as widely publicised – the injuries and deaths of construction workers developing the stadia for the 2022 World Cup to be held in Qatar.
The Washington Post recently reported that the human rights record of the small Gulf state of Qatar, where many building site and construction workers are held against their will whilst working ridiculously long hours is nothing short of disgraceful.
A further investigation by the international law firm DLA Piper went on to state that nearly one thousand construction site workers had so far died whilst working on the World Cup stadiums and transport infrastructure projects.
Not only that, but the the International Trade Union Commission have since estimated that 4,000 workers might die in addition to that in the lead up to the World Cup tournament in 2022.
To put these statistics into some form of context, the graph below compares these fatality numbers to those recorded due to the work on previous global sporting events.
This is one scandal that simply must be addressed, so it’s with a keen eye that we will be watching events unfold in Zurich and the United States over the coming weeks.
